Erica Campbell Speaks on LGBT People in the Christian Community
After educating young women about God’s design for sex in her “More Than Pretty” campaign earlier this year, Gospel singer Erica Campbell is now speaking up about transgender and homosexual people in the Christian community. “I believe sin is sin and it exists, and God forgives it (homosexuality) just like anything else,” Campbell said.
While visiting London last week to perform at the O₂ Shepherd’s Bush Empire music venue with Annastasia Baker, The X-Factor UK contestant, Campbell was questioned about her thoughts “on transsexuals and gays in the Gospel music and church today.” The 43-year-old singer spoke up about the matter at the Team Curtains press event, where she said some people’s issues are more visible than others.
“I think a lot of times we try to be God and we try to make the change. Everybody has an issue,” Campbell said. “Sometimes, people’s is a little more flamboyant than others. Maybe yours is lying and we can’t see your issue.”
Regardless of the sin that people may be struggling with, the singer said it is her job to love them.
“We all have something to work on. My job is to love, not to judge,” she said. “God will do that part..I think our responsibility is to keep singing about Jesus, keep telling the world that He loves, saves, transforms and heals.”
She went on to detail more ways that people in the Christian community should treat those in the transgender and homosexual community by saying, “I think we should keep singing, keep sharing, keep loving, keep opening the doors of our churches, keep embracing and let God do the judging.”
Earlier this summer, the Grammy award winning singer chose to focus specifically on helping young women overcome struggles with sex through a campaign called “More Than Pretty.”
“We’re talking about it to educate a young 16-year-old or 17-year-old girl who may have had sex and feels like she knows everything, but her reference for it all came from not God’s design for it,” she told The Huffington Post. “I do believe sex is for marriage, I’m a bit old school in that respect, but if you understand more in detail the reasons why, you’ll go, ‘Oh, OK I get it now.’ So I think people support learning. I don’t think anyone would be against learning.”
When speaking to The Christian Post last year, Campbell explained the importance of reaching people struggling with sin.
“I just want to reach as many people as possible. I want people to be ok with asking for help,” she previously told The Christian Post. “A lot of times we let our ego get in the way and we don’t ask not only God but we don’t ask anybody for help. And we suffer silently, and it’s not necessary.”
According to the first lady of the California Worship Center church, she is serious about bringing souls to Jesus even when people may get offended in the process.
“I really love Jesus and I’m really really grateful for what I do. I don’t take it lightly,” she told The Christian Post. “It is never my intention to offend people but I know sometimes they get offended. I just hope that they hear and see my heart in the things that I say and the music that I sing. The real purpose is to reach people for Jesus.”
