Earth, Wind & Fire singer says the band no longer has groupies
Philip Bailey, the lead singer of Earth, Wind & Fire, says groupies are a thing of the past.
The 69-year-old laughed when asked if the band, which originated in 1969 and is still going strong, still has ladies eagerly trying to snag a backstage pass.
“The thing that comes to my mind right there is there’s no fool like an old fool,” he guffawed.
“You know what? Everybody at our age, you’re pretty locked into where you are,” he said. “So people come and enjoy the shows and reminisce of where they were, that kind of stuff because the music has become part of the soundtrack of so many people’s lives.
“But if you’re talking about are we still picking up ladies and stuff at 70? No. You’re older and wiser. You’re a lot wiser. Hopefully you’re wiser.”
Bailey still sounds a little amazed at the group’s longevity.
“We have to pinch ourselves, like, ‘Wow this is a ’70s group and we’re still playing stadiums and large places,’” he said. “To still be able to do it on the level we’re doing it and globally is really a pinch-me moment. We don’t take it for granted.”
Earth, Wind & Fire had been set to tour Europe this year with Santana, but COVID-19 disrupted those plans. However, fans can still catch the band grooving with Meghan Trainor on her single “Holidays.”
Bailey’s Music is Unity Foundation is also hosting a virtual holiday gala fundraiser on Thursday, December 3 at 7 p.m. EST. Donations will help support the worthy cause of Foster Youth Initiatives.
